Ever Alice is a novel comprised of fantastical escapism that allowed the reader to reprieve from this troubling reality otherwise known as planet earth. Author H.J Ramsey's command of English is impeccably paired with an extensive vocabulary that will undoubtedly not bore the reader with redundancy or dry writing. The chapters are alive with vivid depictions of well-remembered characters. A few new faces are propitiously written with detail a keen to preserve Alice's legacy and Wonderland's traditional characters and storyline.

Alice isn't the little girl most recalled from Alice in Wonderland--she's a fifteen-year-old young woman that suffered mental illnesses and, by the discretion of her parents, was sequestered to a mental asylum. In hopes of curing her delusions of a place called Wonderland, complete with talking rabbits and other fantastical rhetoric Alice's parents had tired of and were desperate to restore their mentally troubled daughter to equilibrium.

Alice's demeanor had changed from a carefree child to a melancholy teenager that suffered disparaging judgments due to her mental instabilities. Asylum life had worn Alice to a breaking point where she would do nearly anything to leave…anything. Hence, Alice agreed to an experimental procedure that invoked Ralph's return (The White Rabbit), and the reacquainted duo returned to Wonderland. Alice's arrival landed her employment as one of the Queen of Hearts ladies' maids.

Alice was coming of age in Wonderland, and the responsibilities of approaching womanhood, estrangement from her family of origin, and the pressure of Wonderland propelled her into womanhood with a harried jolt. Alice lived between two polaric realities; the grim reality of her life sequestered in an insane asylum and her newly adopted mission in Wonderland to murder the Queen of Hearts.

In addition, to her quest to end the evil queen. Alice grew quite fond of the dashing young Prince of Hearts Thomas. She fell in love with him as he juggled her heart along with a myriad of others as she discovered the complexities of heartache, disappointment, and young love.

Narrator Caroline Holmes British accent added depth and realism to the characters via their own unique inflections, vocal registries, and regional accents that added a theatrical component that eventuated to feeling like listening to a play rather than an audiobook.

Ever Alice is a fantastic read with a penchant for Wonderland's shadow side, where the darker personalities are exposed, and Wonderland's magic eventuated to a depressive mature tone with the element of surprise at the turning of each page!
