Death Masks starts off a bit slow, building Bill's character and giving us the setting. Bill is an average guy, works in IT, likes his computer games, is out of shape, and isn't all that happy with life but he doesn't hate it either. He's got a live-in girlfriend, Dixie, who works at the local hospital. She keeps herself fit and encourages Bill to take up some exercise. And that's when the plot really picks up. Someone has been killing young men and on an exercise day, Bill comes face to face with the killer as they are in the middle of an evil deed in the exercise park.

Bill tries to tell everyone about what he saw but people see his big gut and assume he's clumsy, tripped, hit his head, and dreamed up this killer in the park thing. For me, that was a weak plot point because we have previous bodies and you'd think someone would at least listen to him. Anyhoo, it does act as a catalyst for Bill to start his own investigation, clumsy it may be. He sees suspicious characters everywhere.

I guessed correctly who the killer was early on. So for me, much of Bill's guessing was just a cat and mouse game until the real killer decided he was a true threat. Parts were a little slow and other parts were exciting. Once Bill figures out who the true villain is, there's lots of action (yay!). But I felt the killer's motivations for killing were a little thin and kind of roughly shoved into the story a bit late in the game.

There aren't many ladies in Death Masks and they don't get to do much either. Mostly, they get ogled by the men, or told crude jokes, or lusted over. Even Dixie, Bill's girlfriend, we mostly see her in his bed (and they are sweet together). She does get a few scenes at the hospital and a few others that are plot central. However, over all, the ladies were under represented and then not fully utilized in this story.

All told, Death Masks was OK. It's a full plot with a decent ending.

The Narration: Ron Harman was a great choice for overweight IT guy Bill. He makes Bill very real and I liked how he captured Bill's self-doubt and insecurity in general. Harman had decent voices for the ladies and individual voices for all the characters. The pacing was good & there were no tech issues with the recording.
